The hippocampus in a bowhead whale’s brain is roughly the size of a jet engine; by contrast, a human hippocampus is roughly pinkie-sized. Consequently, bowheads have such excellent long-term memories that they actually remember things that happened before they were born.
In order to receive a PhD in Marine Biology, students at Stanford University must compose and perform an original whale song that is convincing enough to receive a response from a local orca pod.
